Columbia City

Community leaders and Columbia City residents recognize the importance of providing a quality of life which will enhance the growth and development of this exciting township. Within the past few years, Columbia City has worked to raise funds for outstanding organizations such as the Whitley County Family YMCA. Adults and children alike also enjoy the community’s new state-of-the-art Peabody Public Library. Additionally, several carefully maintained parks, catering to tennis, baseball, softball and skateboarding have been recently overhauled to enhance the amenities and overall beauty of the spaces. Each park features an ample children’s play area and large picnic facilities for community events such as the annual Pow Wow which is a celebration of this area’s Native American History. Parks in the township include Morsches Park, Devol Field, Kids Dreamland, Southside Park, Kenneth Wright Park and Patriotic Park to name a few.

The township, with its many parks and attractions, certainly makes for a great place to play outdoors. DeVol Field offers excellent tennis courts and is the ideal place in town to sled in the wintertime. Across the street, children’s laughter fills the air at the expansive Kids Dreamland Park – a park designed by local children several years ago. On the opposite side of town, Morsches Park is a lush, sprawling park with camping facilities, baseball diamonds, a skateboarding course, picnic pavilions and play areas. The Blue River Trail, also on the township’s east side, offers locals a great place to run, bike or hike and observe nature. Lastly, the prime summertime hotspot is Burnworth Pool, which features a full size pool with diving boards and secure kiddie areas. Nearby, in outlying areas, fishing and hunting opportunities abound as do many other exciting activities such as playing golf at one of the region’s many courses and country clubs.

Whitley Country is comprised of nine townships. They are Etna Troy, Thorncreek, Smith, Richland, Union, Cleveland, Washington, Jefferson and Columbia. The county is centrally located in the northern part of the state as is within a thirty minute drive of Fort Wayne, the nearest metropolitan city. The county’s proximity to Fort Wayne and other more populated cities provides country residents with easy access to the many other recreational and employment opportunities this part of the state offers. For Columbia City residents, several major universities and colleges are located within a 25-mile radius. These institutions include both Indiana and Purdue Universities, Michiana College, Ivy Tech State College, Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana Institute of Technology, Taylor University, the University of Saint Francis, Concordia University and both Huntington and Manchester Colleges. Columbia City is served by four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. A private school, Right Side Christian Academy, is also located within the township. Columbia City’s commitment to education has ensured that its local schools receive the support and funding they need to successfully graduate their students and the presence of so many institutions of higher learning in the surrounding areas makes pursuing an education beyond high school easy for the region’s youth.

While a few residents commute to larger cities and towns for employment, most Columbia City residents work within Whitley County. The local economy supports several industries with the top ten county employers being Whitley County Consolidated Schools, Parkview Whitley Hospital, Steel Dynamics, Wal-Mart Superstore, Fort Wayne Foundry, AutoLiv, Dana Coupled Products, Undersea Sensor Systems, Reelcreaft and ChromoSource. The presence of these large employers along with many more family-owned and private businesses have served to steadily strengthen the local economy over the years, ensuring that the future continues to be bright for Columbia City.
